about

Phonat recieved widespread plaudits for his 2009 debut album, which stood loosely within the french house, breakbeat and fidget cannons, while being widly innovative in its production approaches. But Balduzzi was typically contrary in his followup EP, all but abandoning the euphoric sonics of his debut tracks, leaving others to ape his sound, often for greater commercial success. Phonat was chasing a darker, more introverted sound, reflecting his personal move from sunny Florence to grimy Dalston, London.

While the top and tail of this EP, Intimate Confessions and The Microwave FX contain the echoes of the upbeat joy of his early work, Cockroaches and Spliff Dub chart the new direction he would follow over the next years - a kind of ghost of dubstep, in which the pulse of the bedsit metropolis and nights smoking outside clubs echo back to you in intricate soundscapes of negative space.

For his own part, Balduzzi, always the self critical perfectionist had gone off the music by the time he had completed it, handing it in under the E.P. title "Tracks I don't like any more". But others were less negative - including probably the most important producer in the world at the time of release - Skrillex - who referred to it as a masterpiece, and arranged with MofoHifi Records to collaborate with his own OWSLA imprint for Phonat's next releases, which took him to LA and into an even more delicate, complex and minimal sound.

Cockroaches therefore forms the transition point between Phonat's early Italian and London work, and his time in LA with Skrillex, and for all Balduzzi's concern at the time of release, sounds as fresh and virtuoso now as the day it was made.

about

Phonat London, UK

Elusive Italian electronic wunderkind Phonat (Michele Balduzzi) is a remarkable musician, described by Skrillex as "The most underated producer out there".

His 2009 debut album stunned with its deconstructed disco, pop and rock microsamples which followed in the legacy of French house and sowed the seeds of the more mainstream but less sophisticated EDM and Complextro scenes that were to follow.
